Some very good writing here JP. Keeping me interested to the last. I'm sure, if permitted, I have given you some advice along the same lines before (Istanbul comes to mind..) but to repeat if I may:
If everything works out well, then great. If not, you have a story to tell and an experience to learn from.
The latter seems to be the case with the start of your journey, and what an experience it has been in just this first week. This is oh so the adventure of traveling that keeps me going - the uncertainty round the next corner. And it is this that envies me so much.
Looking forward to the next...

What's the balance?
£0 - Well, as of the 1st of February 2010 we suspended the balance at zero. After some work in the winter, we managed to balance the books, and I think out of relief rather than anything else we decided to call off the balancing of joint finances (relief, and because J-P was eating too much cake). Ironically, pretty much ever since then we've been earning money in Italy so right now the balance would be looking entirely healthy, despite J-P's profligate cake-binges. Hey ho.
It's easy to read: if we're in the red, the figure is a negative number. If we're in the black it's positive. We're keeping track in £ sterling. We hope to keep this updated maybe every month. When we have enough of these, I'll put them on a seperate page, but for now historical figures will appear below.
